AB OBJECTIVES: Majority of HIV antibody screening positive samples showed
false positive reaction and cofirmatory negative or indeterminate
results by western blot (WB). To reduce these false positive reactions
by single screening test, a combination assay of two different test
principles EIA and particle agglutination assay (PA) were employed for
HIV antibody screening. METHODS: The first HIV antibody test was
performed by EIA and a second HIV antibody test was performed by PA if
the first screening was positive. Both screening test (EIA and PA)
positive samples were tested by WB and some samples were also tested for
DNA by PCR. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Among 50,000 serum samples, 61 were
positive by EIA. Of these 27 were positive by PA, and of the 27 both
screening positive, 24 were confirmed HIV antibody positive by WB.
Therefore, our combination assay of two different test principles is
practical for HIV antibody screening becouse it avoids many false
positive results if only one screening test is used before the WB test.
