  11.  AB    OBJECTIVES: Majority of HIV antibody screening positive samples showed
  12.        false positive reaction and cofirmatory negative or indeterminate
  13.        results by western blot (WB). To reduce these false positive reactions
  14.        by single screening test, a combination assay of two different test
  15.        principles EIA and particle agglutination assay (PA) were employed for
  16.        HIV antibody screening. METHODS: The first HIV antibody test was
  17.        performed by EIA and a second HIV antibody test was performed by PA if
  18.        the first screening was positive. Both screening test (EIA and PA)
  19.        positive samples were tested by WB and some samples were also tested for
  20.        DNA by PCR. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Among 50,000 serum samples, 61 were
  21.        positive by EIA. Of these 27 were positive by PA, and of the 27 both
  22.        screening positive, 24 were confirmed HIV antibody positive by WB.
  23.        Therefore, our combination assay of two different test principles is
  24.        practical for HIV antibody screening becouse it avoids many false
  25.        positive results if only one screening test is used before the WB test.
